Events

Tuesday, April 16, 11am: Press Conference: Neighborhood Associations and organizations tell public officials “Protect our region from CEI Hub risks!”

The CEI Hub Task Force is holding a press conference on April 16th to announce the release of the CEI Hub Letter to Public Officials. Please join the audience and media in hearing remarks by people personally and professionally involved with these problems.

Although the letter commends Senate Bill 1567 (2022) as an excellent first step, far more must be done to protect community health and safety from the dangers posed by the transportation and storage of 350 million gallons of fossil and biofuels at the CEI Hub. The letter calls on public officials to systematically address areas of concern regarding the activities at the CEI Hub. These areas include the lack of public education about the dangers posed by the Hub, pollution from activities at the Hub, financial responsibility in the case of a disaster and more.

Location: Agustana Lutheran Church, 2710 NE 14th Ave.

Tuesday, April 16, 12-2pm: Support Postdoc Workers: It’s Time for OHSU to Pay their Fair Share!

Please join Postdocs at OHSU for a picket on April 16, gathering at Elizabeth Caruthers Park outside of OHSU CHH2 building. This marks the only day of mediation that OHSU is willing to schedule, despite that they have made no indication they are willing to invest in their postdoc researchers. Join us to call for justice for Postdocs!

WHY WE ENDORSE MIKE: Mike established the first Restorative Justice program for Multnomah County! He also implemented an immigration-neutral sentencing policy so that minor offenses, like traffic tickets, won’t automatically lead to deportation. He set up the Justice Integrity Unit to reverse wrongful convictions, and his office focuses on serious crimes – not minor non-violent law breaking, like protesting in the street. Mike’s corporate-backed opponent wants to take our county backwards – come volunteer to ensure this doesn’t happen!

Willy Chotzen for State Representative (HD-46)

VOLUNTEER: Canvass, phonebank, textbank, display a yard sign

WHY WE ENDORSE WILLY: As a public defender and former public school teacher, Willy is intimately familiar with the injustices faced by working-class Oregonians. That’s why he understands that healthcare and housing are human rights. Willy supports bringing down housing costs by removing the ban on local rent control and instituting a vacancy tax. He believes the state must invest heavily in education, including smaller class sizes for students and better wages for teachers.

Willy will work to achieve universal healthcare, and expand addiction and mental health treatment. He also supports expanding public transportation to help Oregon reach our climate goals. Willy’s pro-worker platform has earned him many union endorsements, and BerniePDX is proud to join them in backing Willy for State Representative in HD-46!

Farrah Chaichi for State Representative (HD-35)

VOLUNTEER: Canvass, phonebank, distribute campaign literature

WHY WE ENDORSE FARRAH: BerniePDX is excited to endorse Farrah Chaichi for State Representative in HD-35 for a second time! As a proud democratic socialist, Farrah is the people’s candidate. She believes that the state should prioritize housing, healthcare, and education for all, over tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy.

Farrah will continue to use her time in Salem to push for more affordable housing through mandatory inclusionary zoning and lifting the statewide preemption on local rent control. She wants to tax big polluters and use the funds to combat climate change. As a vocal proponent of universal healthcare, Right to Rest, and workers’ and tenants’ rights, Farrah is the candidate we need in the legislature!

Participatory Budgeting Oregon

WHY WE ENDORSE PARTICIPATORY BUDGETING: BerniePDX is proud to endorse Participatory Budgeting Oregon! Participatory budgeting is a deliberative democratic process that will give the people of our state a direct say in how to spend a portion of public funds. The initiative is still in the petition stage. Sign the petition to get it on the November ballot: communitybudgetingforall.com/sign-the-petition
