SATURDAY, JULY 30, 12PM: Medicare for All Rally

BerniePDX will be tabling at this event – stop by and say hi!

We’re back! Portland’s Medicare for All Rally returns July 30th, 12 noon, at Shemanski Park.

Join us in celebrating Medicare’s 57th birthday! Get ready for speakers, music, tabling, and organizing. Our hope for this day is to inspire and help you form connections as you learn and take action in the name of healthcare justice and Medicare for All. Local artists will be screen printing, so be sure to bring a t-shirt!

ASL interpreting provided. Masking is encouraged.

This is an important political moment. Reproductive rights and gender-affirming care are under attack, and the COVID-19 crisis has further exposed the broken state of healthcare in our country. Medicare for All is the first and necessary step toward solidifying care for all of those currently lacking access. People all over the country experience health inequities on the basis of race, language, income, type of job, immigration status, disability, and gender identity. The time has come for universal, comprehensive, publicly funded healthcare that is free at the point of service. No premiums, no co-pays, no deductibles. Everybody in, nobody out.

Only a grassroots, people–powered movement can win the change we need. Will you join us in our fight for health justice?

Location: Shemanski Park, PDX

Congratulations Are in Order!

Congratulations to BerniePDX candidates Jo Ann Hardesty (City Council), Farrah Chaichi (HD-35), Libra Forde (Clackamas County), and Travis Nelson (HD-44), who won their elections or advanced to their run-off! Congrats also to Jamie McLeod-Skinner, who is currently ahead of Kurt Schrader by 20% in CD-5!

Unfortunately, there’s an issue in the Clackamas County elections office, so it’s possible we won’t know the final results for weeks. Click here to volunteer to be an elections observer for Jamie during the ballot counting process. One thing is certain: The future of Oregon is brighter than it was last week!

SATURDAY, APRIL 30, 10:30AM-12PM: The People v the Plutocrats in PDX

The Portland Business Alliance is taking a wrecking ball to the city we know and love. And we want to stop them. Join us at this virtual event!

After Portland became central in the BLM protests, the largest social movement in U.S. history, the plutocrats are out in the open and on the attack, determined to remake our city into a playground for the 1%. This right-wing backlash, led by some of the major players within PBA (three of whom have been identified as part of “People for Portland”) are trying to:

  • Reshape City Council by attacking Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty and heavily funding the opposition
  • Undo our groundbreaking voter wins by calling for the dismantling of the Portland Clean Energy Fund and crafting a ballot measure to redirect funds from the Metro Homeless Services affordable housing measure to sweep the unhoused into shelters instead of homes
  • Strengthen theEnhanced Services Districts (despite the City’s own audit) that make the public pay for their private security and city police to criminalize the houseless
  • Attack current campaigns such as an increase in the capital gains tax that will fund universal Eviction Representation for All.

This May, the City budget, City Council and other local elections, and the once-in-a-decade Portland City Charter Review proposals are all on the table. This is our opportunity to defend our wins and fight for a vision of our home that is for the people who actually live here: the workers, tenants, students, immigrants, and unhoused, not just the 1%.

We will hear from organizers leading campaigns around the budget, elections, and charter review, and have time for discussion and to make plans for actions we need to take now.

Join us Saturday, April 30, 10:30-Noon, as we bring together community members who are fighting back—and need your help! This event is hosted by the Portland Metro People’s Coalition, of which BerniePDX is a member organization.

Election Day is just a few weeks away, and the future of our city is at stake. Come spend a couple hours working to elect grassroots candidate AJ McCreary to City Hall!

We need new City Commissioners who will fight for the interests of working class Portlanders, especially the most marginalized. That’s why BerniePDX endorsed AJ McCreary to run against Dan Ryan.

ABOUT AJ:
AJ was born and raised in Portland, and she understands our struggles. She’s a renter who relies on public transportation. She has a record of fighting for racial and economic justice, which Portland urgently needs. AJ’s priorities for the City include stopping the sweeps; distributing resources for pandemic relief; working to ensure that all Portlanders have safe, lead-free drinking water; and strengthening City Hall’s relationship with Portland Public Schools. AJ’s leadership on City Council will be a win for Portland.
